Muzzy Success!

It sure has been a long day. Up at the crack of dawn. Headed up to the burn. Glassed up this buck. Made a stalk. Made a good shot. Tracked and found the buck. Packed the buck back to the truck. Broke camp. Headed home (3 hour drive). Stopped in Springerville to drop my meat off at the processor (Rusty's Meat Shop). Headed home to pick up the kids and get them ready for school tomorrow (Wife's out of town). Just sat down to update the blog. What a day!
Self-Guided hunting is what I do. I had 3 days to hunt in a marginal unit in another state. Sometimes I go home with meat, but not always. This time I was blessed with an incredible opportunity based on the research and preplanning that was made. The goal of www.huntscout.com is to provide resources for the self-guided hunter to increase their odds for success. Please visit our website to help you on your next self-guided hunt.

Triple Crown Completion!

Finally got my Triple Crown! More picts and story to follow....

220 Yards

I think it was a good shot!!! He was with a smaller buck and they both ran around the next ridge. My buck looked like he was going down soon. Got blood at the shot site.....

Buck Spotted

Buck spotted on the next ridge over... He is at 345 yards... I need to get a little closer...

Last Day... Time To Head Out!

Time to head out... Meat hunting today. Last day of my 3 day hunt. It should be a great day!

3 Bucks Spotted in the Burn

I made it back over to the burn for the last 15 minutes of light. Spotted 3 bucks with 2 of them bigger than anything I have seen. One was a small 3 point and the other a small 4 point. Definitely not trophy bucks but bigger than anything I have seen. Will try to find them in the morning. Time for some dinner and a little shut eye.

Low Country A Bust!

Spent most of the mid part of the day scouting the low country. Saw a ton of camps and not much for deer sign. Hiked into a couple of remote waterholes and did'nt see many fresh tracks. Made a big loop in the truck with no deer spotted. Guess I should head back to my burn.... Might be able to get there for the last little bit of light.

2nd Day of the Hunt

This morning was beautful! I woke up to a sliver of a moon. Headed back up to the burn area on Sedgewick and didn't see anything. Decided to head to some lower country where there is an old burn in the pinions. Found 3 small bucks together with the largest being a funky looking 3 point. The other two were 2x1's. One was in velvet and the other was hard horned. On the drive back to camp I saw another 2x1. These small bucks will be in trouble tomorrow. Not sure what to do this evening. Met a guy on the road that said a 9x11 was hit on the road last night on Hwy 53. Maybe I should go hunt the low country and look for a bomber!!!! May not see anything but that's usually where you find the big ones...

No Backstraps Tonight

Well, it looks like the only meat for me tonight is these brats. Played out a tip I got this evening but there was too much private land to try and figure out... Only saw a couple of does.... Tomorrow is another day...

Sunrise on Sedgewick

Sunrise was beautiful this morning! Saw 4 does and one little fork point. Forkies aren't on the hitlist until Monday. Gonna hike some thick ridges mid-day and then try a spot (tip) a friend told me about this afternoon.

Camp is Set! Fire is Going...

There's nothing better than a warm campfire and a tag in your pocket. I sure hope I get another crack at that big ol' buck I saw last year. There is an old burn on the top of Mt. Sedgewick where I saw him last year. Gonna be on top glassing at daybreak..... Gotta get my pack ready. Game on!!!!!

NM Muzzleloader Deer Hunt - Unit 10

Well, I'm off to New Mexico to hunt mule deer with my muzzleloader. Heading back to unit 10 to find that monster I saw last year. Going solo, but it should be a blast. Saw a small 2 point buck driving in so maybe its going to be a good hunt! Keep checking back for hunt updates....

What a great hunt!

What a great hunt! Fast & Furious, but a great time. I will be putting together a hunt report for this unit and posting it at a later time. Thanks for following and check back next weekend when I head back to Unit 10, NM for a muzzy deer hunt. Hunt Smart! Hunt Hard!

Utah Success!

The shot was quick and clean. What an incredible morning. I can't believe I found those antelope where I did. Shots are ringing out all over the valley so I guess a lot of hunters are settling on what they have found. I have quite a hike ahead of me so I had better go get my packer pack and head on down...

Morning Search...

Back at the hidden valley this morning looking for that buck. Couldn't find him for a while so we kept moving along the mountain top glassing below us. Came up to this rock outcropping and thought I saw a deer below me. Looked through the glass and it is the small herd of antelope that we have been looking for. They are in the pines acting like mule deer. I have a perfect shot at the buck I am looking for..... 227 yards...

18 Bucks Today...

We explored all the recommended areas from my research and we saw 18 bucks. All were average bucks. This evening we found a buck that seems to be a little longer than the others so we will hunt him in the morning. We found him in this little hidden valley. Most hunters seem to be overlooking it. What a great day in the woods!

Great Start!

After a long night in the truck, we woke up to this view and a whole herd of antelope out in front of us. This is a good sign! The buck is kind of small so let's keep looking...

One Long Night

Pooring rain, muddy roads, hunt camps EVERYWHERE, all pre-chosen camping spots occupied, sleeping upright in the truck, cramped legs, no REM, snoring buddy (some whimpering too), only three hours of semi sleep. AND I STILL FEEL LIKE IT IS CHRISTMAS MORNING!!!! C'mon sun, let's get rocking!!!!!!
